Happy Weekend + Creative Mornings

Today is an admin day at Swedish school so no school for me! What should I do with all this new free time? Wake up really early and go to Creative Mornings!

03-x-2015_creativemornings

Creative Mornings is a worldwide group (find your city here) meeting once a month to hear inspiring talks from local creatives. All the talks get put up on their website so you can hear with creatives in San Francisco or Berlin or Sydney think about a wide range of topics. This month’s topic is Ink so the Malmö chapter invited three inspiring illustrators to speak and answer questions on why ink is an important medium.  Oh, and there’s coffee and treats and, this morning, temporary tattoos, too! I connected most with the work of Tovelisa, who has done a bunch of awesome illustrations for Granit and also has a coloring book for adults (I love this idea!) coming out soon. You can find her work for sale here.

When you talk about ink, I think, you also have to talk about the opposite of ink. Which, right now, feels like it might be digital. As if ink is old media and digital is the new frontier where all your mistakes are a command+z away from perfection. But of course, it’s knowing how and when to use each that can make the most beautiful result. The very first architectural firm I worked for out of collage strongly encouraged starting all designs on paper and trace with ink first. It all felt like such a waste of time to me! Shouldn’t we get to the doing part? No one’s going to see the ink stuff so I felt like we should just start blocking things out in the design program and work up from there so as not to waste time. But they were right. Something gets lost, creativity slips away, when you can press delete so easily. Or worse, you go down a rabbit hole of how some little command works or that’s not the right thickness of line and how do I change it and what’s that new cool feature that is suppose to make everything better and how is it used? Before you notice an hour has gone by and you better well have something ready to present. Oops. So ink is a better start. I think it’s wonderful to find out how that new feature works, and maybe it will be really awesome, but when you need to create something ink is better. When I work I don’t want anything between me and getting all the creativeness out. If it comes out wrong, I can fix it later in that fancy design program, but first I have to get the creative out.

Sitting in front of a blank piece of paper with an (old) pen in your hand is a bit daunting. The only thing between you and a realization of creativity is ink. And maybe that’s better.

Pick Of The Week + Everyday Egg Cup

I’m a little behind on things again this week. Spending hours trying to learn Swedish everyday is really cutting into my daydreaming time. But don’t worry. I’m doodling in the margins of my notebook and thinking about crafts between adverbs. Maybe I’ll have time to craft this weekend. Hopefully.

I thought we could talk about egg cups today since we’re so close to Easter (or påsk, in this part of the world). I hated eggs for most of my childhood and then last year, boom, I had a weird craving to just try one. One that I cooked myself since part of my hatred/fear was of eating eggshells. Turns out I like ‘um! I like them really well done, or what I call “over-hard”, and preferably in the center of a piece of toast. But there’s a whole world of egg types, and the mysterious names that come with them (Benedict?), for me to try. Including the classic hard-boiled/soft-boiled variety that comes with an awesome accessory: egg cups!

Living Etc. just ran a round up of egg cups in their April 2015 issue (page 32) and my favorite is Emma Lacey‘s Everyday Egg Cup. It’s so simple and unassuming in (currently gushing over) ceramic and a matte pale pink wash (also comes in white and deep blue). The little belly button is the perfect place to nestle your thumb in for a good grip as you enjoy your egg. This little dent shows up on her whole range for The Conran Shop including mugs that beg to be snuggled and milk jugs whose dent is their handle. Every piece is hand thrown in the UK so every one is unique. I can’t wait for my set to arrive with the Easter bunny.

Happy Weekend + Vårmässan 2015

wrongforhay_varmassan2015

I was invited yesterday by  Helén Sandström of Ogeborg to Vårmässan (Spring Fair) 2015, hosted by Input Interiör in Limhamn. I had a wonderful time exploring a little over 60 different vendors products. We also were treated to a fabulous dinner with a stunning view of the Öresund bridge and strait at sunset. It was a really lovely evening with really lovely people.

This shot is from the Hay booth, which was amazing as always. I posted a few images last night and I’m going to be posting more of the image from the evening over the next week on my instagram and twitter feeds. So go follow me!

Pick Of The Week + Bocci 22 Series Outlet

I know that cast iron Kohler Brockway wash sink is to die for! But let’s try to focus people. What did you almost miss in this image because it’s so unobtrusively awesome? Yep, that beautifully integrated outlet. The Bocci 22 Series is a full line of switches and outlets without an ugly cover plate in sight. The outlets are mounted flush to drywall, millwork or virtually any wall surface and are so visually subtle they virtually disappear. Though, if an outlet is gunna go around looking this good, maybe I want it to stand out a bit. So, they’ve cleverly designed an offset double gang mounting plate, because that is cool. Right now, they are only available in 15A and 20A North American plugs (you lucky ducks, you). Find the whole series on the Bocci online shop.

Faves + (St. Patrick’s Day) Green Inspiration

Since today is St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve rounded up some of my fav green interiors for you for inspiration. Green is such a tricky, and yet intriguing, color to decorate with. I was so sure I hated the shade in no. 5, but it works so well with the dark stained countertop + serving board and I’m a convert. My fav shade of green has to be no. 2, in deep emerald (with amazingly awesome fuchsia sofa, love). But I know the weird matte blue-green of no. 6 + 7 is so popular right now, and I love it, too. I was thinking grey for our bedroom walls but now, maybe I’ll be a bit more daring and go deep green!
