Pick of The Week + Real Good Chair

This weekend was quite an exciting one for me. I found the last unsold issue of the impossible to find US mag Dwell at our train station’s magazine shop!! I know. I was beyond excited, too. My last issue is from this summer when I had our cousin tote it from California for me. Needless to say, I spent a good chuck of the rest of the weekend on the couch reading.

I was happy to see that one of my favorite furniture design companies, Blu Dot, was featured for inexpensive chair design. The faceted Real Good Chair comes in at just $149 and has a name Ron Swanson would approve. It’s made of durable powder coated steel and is flat packed for cheaper + more environmental shipping. Which means it’s also semi-DIY! It even has a cardboard angle guide so all those facets come out perfect. The Real Good Chair has two companion sizes (bar and counter height stools) and comes in 7 colors + copper, guaranteed to beautifully patina with use.

Happy Weekend + Flensburgska Huset

When there is a sunny day in Sweden, it’s nearly criminal to not go for a walk. This beautiful 16th century house is just a few minutes walk from our house, on Södergatan, the major walking street in Malmö. It’s called Flensburgska Huset and it’s definitely one of my favorite buildings around town. I love the stripped red and white stripped brick and the windows with a million tiny panes. There’s even a coffee shop right across the walking street so you can sit and think about the 419 years of history this little house has seen.

The New Look + Mood Board

Since it’s rebranding week, I thought I would also share the mood board I’ve been working with for the new look. It’s all about the cool, clean, simplicity with Carole + Ellie personality and craftiness. I’m dying for a pair of these Swedish Hasbeen clogs and I definitely need to plan a trip to Mons Klint in Denmark (so stunning!).

Carole and Ellie + The New Look

Today is the day! I finally get to show you all what I’ve been working on behind the scenes for, what seems like, ever. THE NEW LOOK!

The new square logo is so wonderfully bold and graphic in jet black and Open Sans Extra Bold 800 (a FREE google font). It’s got Scandinavian style and simplicity without losing any personality. I’m totally in love.

I really like watercolor but the old blog logo wasn’t doing it for me anymore. It wasn’t easily reproducible in other mediums and it didn’t properly represent exactly what the feel and content of the site really is (or at least what I hope it will be). Also, I am super happy to trade in the link text lines for real super cool buttons that add more interesting navigation to the site. I hope you’ll poke around a bit and try it all out!

I’ve kept some references to some of the old style of Carole + Ellie, like the watercolor in the new masthead. I love watercolor, it’s my favorite paint medium so it made sense to keep it incorporated somewhere. Just not in the logo. And I’ve kept the blue but slightly tweaked it to be a fresher teal blue.

Possibly my second favorite part of the new look is my new secondary design elements font, Manhattan Darling. Seriously guys, I couldn’t fall asleep the night I bought it because I was so excited about using it the next day. Talk about font nerd Christmas!
