CINDY LACKEY

DESIGNER

Pick of the Week + BEdesign

We’re California sunshine bound! My sis and her beau are getting married at the end of this month and I could not be happier to share the day with them. We’ll be spending nearly a month catching up with family and friends and just hanging out. I feel so lucky to have the best friends house and kitty sitting for us back here at home, and that means at least one case of Cali wine is coming home with us as presents! I’m so excited to visit our favorite vineyards, like Big White House and Concannon, and taste all the new releases. It’s gunna be an awesome trip. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on Fridays’ posts and over on Instagram + Twitter.

This week’s pick is a design company founded by a pair of inspiring sisters from Finland, BEdesign. Bette and Cilla Eklund, designer and marketing manager respectively, have stuck to the ideals of Finish design, staying true to raw materials and creating clean geometric forms that are intuitively functional. Above is one of my favorite piece from the collection, the Wave Table (which is in prototype). I love the effortless magazine rack wave that works set as a high or low table.

I also really like the Lume Coatrack, which comes in two sizes. The design is minimalistic but with a playful catch. The expected third and fourth leg to the rack are missing giving the whole piece a twisting feel and that extra bit of intrigue that makes this design irresistible for an entryway or ganged together in the bedroom.

This design team has such a great focus on creating the next generation of great Finish design. I got a change to meet with the sisters at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and their creative energy is infectious. BEdesign is definitely one one to watch.

Pick Of The Week + Everyday Egg Cup

I’m a little behind on things again this week. Spending hours trying to learn Swedish everyday is really cutting into my daydreaming time. But don’t worry. I’m doodling in the margins of my notebook and thinking about crafts between adverbs. Maybe I’ll have time to craft this weekend. Hopefully.

I thought we could talk about egg cups today since we’re so close to Easter (or påsk, in this part of the world). I hated eggs for most of my childhood and then last year, boom, I had a weird craving to just try one. One that I cooked myself since part of my hatred/fear was of eating eggshells. Turns out I like ‘um! I like them really well done, or what I call “over-hard”, and preferably in the center of a piece of toast. But there’s a whole world of egg types, and the mysterious names that come with them (Benedict?), for me to try. Including the classic hard-boiled/soft-boiled variety that comes with an awesome accessory: egg cups!

Living Etc. just ran a round up of egg cups in their April 2015 issue (page 32) and my favorite is Emma Lacey‘s Everyday Egg Cup. It’s so simple and unassuming in (currently gushing over) ceramic and a matte pale pink wash (also comes in white and deep blue). The little belly button is the perfect place to nestle your thumb in for a good grip as you enjoy your egg. This little dent shows up on her whole range for The Conran Shop including mugs that beg to be snuggled and milk jugs whose dent is their handle. Every piece is hand thrown in the UK so every one is unique. I can’t wait for my set to arrive with the Easter bunny.

Pick Of The Week + Bocci 22 Series Outlet

I know that cast iron Kohler Brockway wash sink is to die for! But let’s try to focus people. What did you almost miss in this image because it’s so unobtrusively awesome? Yep, that beautifully integrated outlet. The Bocci 22 Series is a full line of switches and outlets without an ugly cover plate in sight. The outlets are mounted flush to drywall, millwork or virtually any wall surface and are so visually subtle they virtually disappear. Though, if an outlet is gunna go around looking this good, maybe I want it to stand out a bit. So, they’ve cleverly designed an offset double gang mounting plate, because that is cool. Right now, they are only available in 15A and 20A North American plugs (you lucky ducks, you). Find the whole series on the Bocci online shop.

Pick Of The Week + The Stelton Vacuum Jug

This week’s pick is a design classic, the Stelton Vacuum Jug or EM77 Termokande. This graphic jug was created by Swedish designer Erik Magnussen in 1977 for Stelton. The jug was launched in stainless steel originally but now also comes in plastic and soft touch plastic in a revolving myriad of colors for each new season. A classic Swedish design made new.

To purchase try Finnish Design Shop or Nasty Gal.

Pick Of The Week + Lovedales Studio

I know I must have seen Hanne Løvdal‘s work before but it re-caught my eye this weekend. Audrey and I did a design shop tour through Oslo (using the Oslo City Guide from Design Sponge). We hit 7 shops in 5 hours, which is pretty good for a pregnant lady and her design obsessed friend. Lots of interesting things were posted on my Instagram and Twitter and even more little ideas ended up in my sketch book. Design shops are so inspiring. Get ready for some awesome DIYs this month!

Our last stop of the day was the House of Oslo shopping mall. But this is better than any shopping mall I could have imagined. This shopping mall only has design shops! The anchor shop is Illiums Bolighus (four floors of it!), which is always lovely, but I wanted to see shops I can’t browse at home. So we popped into the Raun Concept Shop which had the lovely Lovedales Studio work on display.

Hanne Løvdal mixes digital coloring with pencil and watercolor sketches to create compelling illustrations. She quit her job as a magazine art director in 2013 to pursue her art full time. This print “Jomfruen/Virgo” is one of my favs from her 12 zodiac signs series, each sign represented with beautifully intricate hair. Check out her online print shop which ships worldwide. Oh! And, Løvdal is available for commission work, “if you think [her] pen can suit your project”.  So sweet.
